Trex Challenge
What is our goal?
The goal of the Bay Area Leo Club is to collect over 500 pounds of plastic within six weeks of starting the challenge. After being mentored by the Millbrae Leos, the Bay Area Leos are now devoted to keeping this project going to help our own communities. The benches won will be donated to the City of Millbrae and installed in local parks and trails for public use.
What types of plastic can be recycled with us?
We only recycle clean and stretchy plastics. Some of the most common types of plastic that we recycle include Amazon plastic bubble mailers, plastic shopping bags, shipping mailers, etc. For more information on what can be recycled with us, check out this page from TREX themselves!
Achievements
By participating in this TREX recycling challenge, the Bay Area Leos have collected over 2,000 lbs of recyclable plastics, equivalent to 4 park benches! We have also been applauded by both the Hillsborough and Burlingame Mayors during their separate weekly meetings! We are so grateful to our Burlingame and Hillsborough communities for helping us collect all of this plastic, and ultimately achieve our goal of over 500 lbs!
Where do we have plastic collection bins?
As of now, we have bins at the back of Burlingame City Hall and inside the Burlingame Public Library. In the past, we also had bins at the Hillsborough town hall. Our plan for the future is to have collection bins in Burlingame, Hillsborough, and San Mateo!
How do we sort plastic?
The Bay Area Leos meet up weekly to sort through plastic turned in by our community. We sort trash from the recyclable plastics to make sure that we are recycling the correct materials and actually making a difference. Through this challenge, we are able to form community- club relationships. Without the help of our community, we wouldn't have achieved over 2,000 lbs of recyclable plastics (4 park benches)!
Where does the plastic go?
The plastic we sort is eventually sent to the TREX Company with the help of transportation through Safeway.
